William Ferguson, V, 19, of New Castle, Delaware, has been charged with 23 counts tied to felony drug distribution and firearm violations in Maryland following a strange scene that played out last fall.

In October last year, state police investigators in Cecil County were on patrol in the Winding Brook community in Elkton when they spotted a group of people surrounding a 2019 Ford Fusion with a temporary Delaware registration that was blasting loud music, police say.

As investigators approached the Ford, the group scattered, leaving the engine running and unattended, prompting further investigation after a K-9 was alerted to the presence of Controlled Dangerous Substances (CDS) inside the vehicle.

Inside the Ford Fusion, officers found:

  • A loaded Glock Model 26;
  • 9mm semi-automatic pistol with a 15-round extended magazine;
  • 222 bags (85 grams) of suspected heroin/fentanyl mix;
  • 35 grams of suspected cocaine;
  • 32 grams of suspected crack cocaine;
  • 291 grams of suspected crystal meth;
  • Drug packaging materials;
  • Functioning digital scales;
  • Identification documents.

The following month, investigators received a National Integrated Ballistic Information Network lead that was connected to the loaded Glock, which showed that the weapon was used in a shooting reported in Delaware.

Coordinating with the neighboring New Castle County Police Department, Maryland State Police investigators were able to charge Ferguson with a prior shooting. DNA samples also linked Ferguson to the crime in Maryland.

He was ultimately tracked down in Delaware and arrested on Thursday, April 27, according to state police.

Ferguson is being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Facility in Delaware as he awaits his extradition back to Maryland.
